Detroit, MIYou can find Corridor's creative links in over 30 restaurants around Michigan, not to mention farmers' markets and grocery stores, but for pure experience points the best place to down one of their sausages is from the 50 yard line of the Lion's Den. Their stand at Ford Field slings only a small selection of their worldly creations, which feature all hormone/antibiotic-free meats, and next-level ingredients like lemongrass and lime leaves in their popular Vietnamese chicken sausage. They've yet to announce the menu for the 2015 season, but we're hoping for a bacon & beer brats, since nothing pairs better with pigskin than pork. Plus, for those who prefer grilling their own, Delia's chicken links are also sold at damn near every Kroger in town. Milwaukee, WIMilwaukee is so serious about brats that the humble sausage has inspired court battles, so we knew they'd have one of the best in the country. Despite the city's wealth of established sausage slingers, our hat tip goes to the newbie Vanguard, whose nutmeg, coriander & beer pork brat is not to be missed.

After building a clientele hungry for dried Polish mushrooms and candies they loved during childhood, S&D built out a kitchen serving a nostalgic menu of pierogis, borscht, and most importantly, a smoked then grilled kielbasy with a side of beets, horseradish, and mustard (from Poland, of course). Dallas, TXKarl Kuby's recipes date back to the 1700s, and since opening in '61, he's been a fixture at the shop. But these days the captain of casing is certified master German butcher Dieter Probson, who stocks the retail cases with 16 types of sausages, seven of which are available at the attached restaurant. You can't go wrong with any of them thanks to Probson's six years of sausage schooling, but the favorite is the grilled weisswurst, a traditional veal and pork link that's pale in complexion and dotted with subtle herbs like parsley. Cleveland, OHBratwurst and kielbasa are dietary staples in Cleveland, and nobody does either better than Sokolowski's, a Tremont tradition. With respect to the wonderful Polish boy of Cleveland lore, it's really saying something when Sokolowski's remains the best Polish experience in a town with more "skis" than Aspen, and their fresh takes on kielbasa and brats are the finest you'll get in any restaurant in the city.

Piping-hot fried cheese curds — a Wisconsin passion — have a subtle coating that does not get in the way of the stretchy curds within. They come with a dusting of Parmesan that boosts the salt to a more flavorful level, enhancing the creamy, neutral curd. The classic brat — an ideal late-night snack — comes dressed with sauerkraut and mustard with a side of hot-from-the-fryer French fries. He loves sausage fest jokes as much as the next guy, but not as much as the next guy, or the next guy, or the next guy.

We folk from outside of the area make do with Johnsonville, a tasty product no doubt, but one that remains second tier compared to Milwaukee’s most famous sausage. And while the humble sausage offerings here aren't as diverse as some of the others on the list, it's the simplicity of this joint that makes it fantastic. Plus, if you must continue your sausage quest, there are a ton of Polish delis nearby. Washington, DCThe line between a hot dog and sausage is sometimes blurry, and if there's one link on this list that has a foot in each camp, it's DC's beloved half-smoke. It's no secret that we love Meats & Foods, and their half-beef, half-pork, don't-call-it-a-dog is the best in a city, with a flavor that stands up even without giving it a bath in chili.

The classics are great, but what sets them apart are the more experimental moves like seven options styled after cities (from the Pittsburg with vinegar slaw, fries & ranch to the garlic-loaded Transylvania), plus beer-paired chef's creations like the Indian Kilig or Southeast Asian Thai Breaker. Most people might not want to go to a sausage fest, or see how sausage is made, or order it instead of bacon at breakfast, but no matter how intestine-cased or phallic-looking it is, we here at Thrillist have a deep love and admiration for the humble sausage. Few meats walk the tightrope between traditionalism and creativity quite like it, and to celebrate this dichotomy we've compiled a list of the 21 best sausage purveyors in the country.

You can't argue with the historical legacy of those joints, but we gave Micklethwait the nod because his daily cased offerings transcend the typical BBQ sausage with unusual meats like duck with cherries or pork belly andouille, which are worth the trip alone. Los Angeles, CALA's most beloved (and most unpronounceable) sausage mini-chain started a trend... And then outlived it, thanks to killer locations, a great beer selection, and carefully sourced sausages that run the gamut from standard-but-delicious (kielbasa, bockwurst) to daring-and-oddball (mango jalapeno, duck & bacon). Plus they earn bonus points for offering five types of mustard and double-dipped Belgian fries. Covington, KYJust across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, Wunderbar is an outpost of German-centricities that -- in addition to giant pretzels, beer cheese, and one of the city's best burgers -- is the area's go-to place for sausage. Pittsburgh, PAJust west of Pittsburgh's Polish Hill neighborhood, S&D was started in 2008 by a couple of recent immigrants who were unable to find their favorite foods anywhere else in town.

Miami, FLThis beer hall in the middle of Miami's art district not only cranks out some of the best steaks in the city, but literally cranks out a dozen different original sausages that you can take to go or enjoy with a beer in their outdoor dining room. Highlights include a chicken sausage with plum wine, Hungarian mettwurst with caraway and paprika, currywurst, and blue cheese and fig, all of which are best enjoyed with a side of steak. Seattle, WAApologies to tubular meat mainstays like Uli's Famous Sausages, or Shultzy's, but this cavernous former furniture warehouse is by far the coolest place in Seattle to slam some 'sage. The sauerkraut- and-horseradish-sided plates of keilbasa, frankfurters, bratwurst are all made from scratch on-site, which is definitely (sorry about this... ) the wurst way to get it. Portland, ORFormerly known as Olympic Provisions -- until a certain athletic organization hilariously took issue with the name -- Olympia's wares are carried all over the west coast and beyond, and for good reason.

Whether you're getting breakfast links, chorizo, brats, Italians, or fancy salumi, the Portland artisan meat-packers serve up some of the best damned sausage to hit buns and charcuterie boards in the region. But they're best enjoyed with a craft cocktail at OP's two Portland outposts, where they're also serving up sopressata, salchichon, and other wonders. Peabody, MAThe Boston area's cased-meat game is no joke, as evidenced by the world-famous Sausage Guy and beloved newcomer Browyn (one of the best beer garden's in the nation!), but our pick is 20 miles north just outside of Salem in the small town of Peabody. Bavarian buffs make the pilgrimage to Karl's to pick up pantries worth of German groceries, but the most popular items are the 55 varieties of sausage, the best of which can be devoured at the in-house restaurant. Should you happen by during Oktober, don't miss the RostBratwurst that's been spiked with Sam Adams Oktoberfest. San Francisco, CAThe girth and flavor of Rosamunde's sausages are no secret.

And if none of those excite you, you can't go wrong with the apple-/cran-studded wild boar. The Usinger factory doesn’t serve food, but there is a fine bar across the street that might as well be its galley. Here you get brats, as fresh as they could possibly come, grilled correctly with tasty fixin’s and soft split buns. It is the sausage-smith behind what are perhaps the best brats in Wisconsin.

Kansas City, MOYou can score a solid sausage at almost any BBQ joint in Kansas or Missouri, but it's rare to find a KC masterpiece that perfectly channels the taste of Vienna. Nobody does Austria better than Grunauer, which is fitting since the family behind the massive hall of beer and brats has been operating a similar restaurant in Vienna since 1957. Andouille, currywurst, veal kalbsbratwurst, cheddar filled kasekrainer, and a brat loaded with Tommyknocker pale ale round out the sausages on the menu.

We suggest you wash them down with a Helles from local German-minded ale-slingers KC Bier Co. Austin, TXSince opening his trailer in 2013, Tom Micklethwait has climbed to the top tier of Austin's much-debated barbecue scene, with his brisket earning rave reviews from our local expert and beef ribs taking home the alt weekly's first inaugural beef-rib smackdown trophy. Those accolades aside, you might argue that mainstays like Meyer's Smokehouse in Elgin or Kreuz in Lockhart make the best smoked sausage in the state.

Introduction to Art: Design, Context, and Meaning Open Textbook Library

art design

Contrast refers to the placements of different elements in a composition, for example, color, space, shape, or others. By utilizing contrast strategically, it will convey a sense of emphasis, or otherwise stated; it will emphasize a certain area in the composition. Symmetrical refers to both sides being the same, or “mirroring” one another. Asymmetrical refers to both sides having different subject matter or objects, but there is a balanced effect, nonetheless. Radial balance means that the visual elements are “equally” placed around a central point in the composition. Balance is about the compositional “weight of visual elements”, whether these are applied in such a manner that provides the effect of even distribution.

Belmont University

Not only will you develop a deeper understanding of how artists work today, you’ll also explore some of their approaches to the pressing issues and questions of our time. By taking this course, you’ll build skills for looking at contemporary art wherever you encounter it and make connections to your own life or creative practice. Modern Art & Ideas is designed for anyone interested in learning more about modern and contemporary art. You will look at art through a variety of themes, including Places and Spaces, Art and Identity, Transforming Everyday Objects, and Art and Society. The elements of art can be viewed as the colors on your palette, and the principles of design can be viewed as the different paintbrushes.

The Fundamentals: What Are the Principles of Art?

For her Foyer of Enchantment, Scheff installed a custom mural by Hattas Art Studios, a John Richard chandelier dripping with glass leaves, a silk wall covering by Aux Abris, and organic furniture created with Amorph Studio. “I wanted you to feel like you were transported to another time and place,” Scheff says. This intensive, immersive experience is designed for developing creatives in high school who are 14.5 years of age or older. Summer of Art 2024 will take place in-person at Otis College’s main campus in Los Angeles, CA.

Students would be advised to read the chapter in advance of lectures / tutorials and to use this as a starting point for their research. I liked how the text included non-traditional images to explain some concepts. This gave the book a fresher feel that millennials could more easily connect with. It would be a nice to incorporate larger image examples of select artworks. The PDF form with live links to websites and on-line resources was easy to use.

She is yet to complete her Masters in Art History (she would like to do this abroad in Europe) having given it some time to first develop more professional experience with the interest to one day lecture it too. Additionally, space is conveyed in art through variations of depth, otherwise referred to as perspective, and proportion otherwise referred to by size. Furthermore, in visual art, we are generally looking at a two-dimensional surface, therefore a form creates the “illusion” of three-dimensionality. Form as an art element refers to the three-dimensionality of an object, it is usually described as having volume, which comprises width, height, and depth.

The text examines visual art from a wide variety of cultures over a range of geographical sites, but is somewhat Eurocentric. More emphasis on African, Asian, South Asian, Native American and Oceanic art would have diversified its approaches and content. The text approaches the critical analysis of visual art from distinct perspectives that are clearly signaled by chapter headings.

The key terms found throughout the text are also very helpful and are perhaps more useful at the end of each chapter, rather than a comprehensive glossary at the end of the book. This book covers just about everything needed for teaching students the basics of visual literacy and introducing them to art. This text has a range of images and includes various time periods, styles, and works from Western and non-Western cultures. The textbook, however, lacks significant references to contemporary art. A vast majority of the work presented is pre-1960 and most of the media covered is traditional fine art media (painting, sculpture, drawing). That being said, the authors provide glossaries at the end of each chapter of target vocabulary, a comprehensive index, and write thoughtfully and thoroughly to provide a solid context to the works/images shown within the text.

The book could be adapted for teaching a more conventional survey of art if sections are assigned based on content. The strength of this work is that students are asked to make comparisons. This textbook is a fairly comprehensive primer on art from the approach of purpose, materials, structure and meaning.

The designer referenced the house’s original name, El Robles—Spanish for oak tree—with a tree-filled landscape mural by Arpy Dabbaghian. “For the wall mural, I had to pick something to bring them into nature and a calming environment,” Lalikian says. For a bedroom off the nursery, Carmine Sabatella wanted to create a jewel-toned escape. “I thought, if somebody’s taking care of the baby, they have a space where they can come and feel like it’s a retreat,” Sabatella says.

Because it covers so many different areas—it doesn’t go into a lot of depth in any one area. However, an instructor could easily provide more depth by providing supplementary material for specific areas. The book is arranged by topics or themes which is typical for most art appreciation books. It is not arranged chronological--which is usually the format for art history books.

Artists and designers from across the U.S. and around the world come to study at the USC Roski School—a unique environment for creativity, experimentation and collaboration in the heart of Los Angeles. Colossal participates in affiliate marketing programs and may earn a commission on sales through links to Bookshop, Etsy, and elsewhere. Rubio is currently working toward a couple of show in 2025 and continuing New Prophets. Find more on the artist’s website, and stay up to date on Instagram. Rubio coats the balls with plaster and gesso—ensuring it doesn’t deflate—criss-crosses the form along its distinctive lines, and adds vibrant flowers, stylized text, medieval motifs, and mythical creatures.

While the content is dominated with Western Art concepts and examples, it still includes a number of diverse cultural works and traditions from different historical eras and locations. Excellent -- these are short, include many genres, mediums, and cultural styles in a sensible way. Usually, the chapters include a variety, and this enhances the global perspectives that the authors encourage. It also makes it easier to select works of art to focus on, if you are covering particularly modern or World Art, for example. Chapters 8-10 in particular are disappointing in that they offered a chance to move away from a traditional, Eurocentric approach. While the authors do include some non-western examples as they proceed, they still rely too much on European art.

Readers must review the table of contents and guess where information may be found. There are some opinions expressed that I do not agree with, but these are debates that are not settled within the art history community. The authors do not seem completely up to date on recent scholarship in some areas. For example, the "Snake Goddess" from Crete is included when modern scholarship has called into question the validity of its heavily reconstructed form. The focus of the textbook is mostly on art made before 1960, with most of it produced long before that. There is a dearth of examples of contemporary art being made by artists in the last 20 years.

The text does an excellent job on covering a broad spectrum of cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds. At no point could any content be misconstrued as culturally inoffensive, as the writers did a good job in remaining objective in presenting the facts. For example, the section on The Dome of the Rock in Chapter Six is a sensitive topic, but the writers treated it with historical accuracy and cultural and religious sensitivity. The text is organized logically and the chapters are based on clear topics. The division of content into small, clearly labeled and organized sections makes it easy to approach, navigate, and understand. The content is accurate, error-free, and, with its many comparative references to different cultures and times, very unbiased.

I save Chapter Four for the middle of most classes, in which we are beginning to do more art descriptions as a group. I use Chapter Six towards the end of the courses, where the class begins to conduct research and observe more creative drives and themes. I apply Chapters Eight and Nine based on the time periods, and how relevant they are the subject matter or styles covered in the course. I have thought about inserting Chapters Eight and Nine right after Chapter One in order to address the modern period and the growing individualism in modern art.

In addition, references to LGBTQ artists would be a welcome addition, as would including supplementary sections dedicated to contemporary artistic production. The authors have been careful to include discussions of more contemporary art forms like new media and graphic novels, and additional examples would be relatively easy to insert into the text. Discussions of early modern and modern art are already strong. The first, and the most egregious example is the lack of historical and cultural contexts, normally found in the form of sections on art history.

To include contemporary artwork in the text, links to outside images are provided in the text. Outdated links or redirects could cause the text to become obsolete. This is a benefit for adding new contemporary or cultural examples through the text. This text is a comprehensive survey of ideas and subjects— theoretically and historically, similar to other text for an introduction to visual arts course. A wide variety of artistic media styles, time periods, and regions are covered, mostly with examples from Western art. I can see how this text can be easily incorporated with my previously prepared lessons.

The Most Famous Artists and Artworks

The book is at times accessible and yet also full of scholarly jargon that is confusing to those not familiar with that type of writing. Throughout the text, the authors "name drop" scholars, art schools, historical figures and events, etc. without providing context. Even the metadata for artworks is always clear as there are times where the text will omit information rather than indicating that the information is unknown. Each level of heading seem to be good breaking points to create smaller readings or to remix and rearrange the text. Although the image examples left out info on size, media, date and location of the art work.

Introduction to Art: Design, Context, and Meaning

The short time frame led to a series of large-scale portraits that focused on an imagined central figure, often peering directly back at the viewer, in front of vibrant backgrounds. But he quickly grew uninspired by painting the straightforward head-and-shoulder compositions. “Portraits, which are usually based in concepts of identity, can present a challenge for artists desiring to suggest narratives,” he tells Colossal.

There are a few instances in which the title of a work in the text narrative does not match the title given in the caption for the image. There are also some terms listed in the glossary that do not appear in the corresponding chapter. Similarly, there are some inconsistencies in the “Test Yourself” questions, in which the corresponding information is missing. The textbook is divided into small reading sections with clear headings and subheadings.

The bolded key terms and glossary in each chapter are very useful. The prose is clear but drifts between accessible and academically clunky. I wish the images of artworks were captioned with the date completed and, where applicable, an indication that the artist is unknown rather than omitting artist information.

Including an index would assist students in navigating the book. The textbook profiles works from ancient through modern times. The text is arranged in a way that introduces students to important concepts for viewing and considering artwork, and uses a logical sequencing of information. The textbook introduces students to some of the major “movers and shakers” in art history, and has many high-quality images of the works discussed within the chapters. In fact, it seems only a handful of post-1960 artists are mentioned and very few supporting images are provided of post-1960 artwork. To be fair, there are links provided, which will require upkeep.

This is a large omission, especially for students studying for midterms and finals, or working on papers or larger group projects. The choice of chapter topics and their flow is appropriate and student-centered. The book starts with basic information (what art is, its structure, media used) and works toward greater complexity (various ways art connects to and shapes our lives). This Open Textbook is a valuable addition to the canon of texts currently recommended as an introduction to art. The thematic chapters provide a perfect platform to commence a discussion on a topic (for example, meaning in art).

Some of these technical words are not even included in the "Key Terms" sections at the end of each chapter, forcing the readers to figure it out by themselves and confusing students who might have little or no background in art. As to Higher Order Learning skills, specifically analysis/evaluation, I don't see enough in the text on how to analyze a work of art. They simply include a brief section with only two images and all too brief corresponding paragraphs of academic visual analysis. I don't see many connections to previous sections on the vocabulary used in visual analysis. The authors academically explain an idea, or a theme, but give the students much opportunity to apply those ideas. As stated above, the book is heavily Eurocentric and focused on Western art.

I also found the diagram used to explain the Lost Wax method of casting to be poor. Extra features, like allowing users to zoom in on pieces, or adding arrows to specific parts of images under discussion might make this more accessible and interactive. I appreciate that the text stresses, right from the beginning, the importance of images in contemporary society. Asking the question -- how does Bouguereau's work relate to today -- is a good way to connect past art to the present. I do wish it would have given more examples though of new media art.

While there is no index, the reader may refer to the chapter titles and the glossaries found at the end of each chapter. Sentences are easily understood and the use of art-specific vocabulary (along with providing a glossary at the end of each chapters) shows students appropriate use of target vocabulary. Chapter topics are presented in clearly, accessibly, and with depth. The textbook is arranged in a logical manner that introduces students to important concepts which enable them to understand how to describe a work within its cultural framework and uses a logical sequencing of information. The textbook has many high-quality images of the works discussed within the chapters.

The contemporary art could easily be updated to keep this as a current and relevant text especially since links are used. The text is easy to read and would be accessible to college students. All specialized terminology are conveniently in boldface type and are defined both in-chapter as well as in a section at the end of the chapter.

Chapters in the text follow a logical and consistent structure. Chapters build in a logical progression a the beginning of the text. Each chapter opens with Learning Outcomes and ends Key Concepts, Test Yourself, and Key Terms sections to check for understanding. Then they need to have an immediate opportunity to apply those ideas.
